The American Kennel Club Circle Stitch Cuddler we first reviewed here is no longer sold, so this page now covers a cuddler-style bed that is easy to find today: the Spotted Play Orthopedic Dog Bed with Sides. Like the AKC bed, it surrounds a cushioned sleeping area with raised sides for dogs that like to curl up and rest their head on something.

Specs

The base is high-density egg-crate foam, which spreads a dog’s weight across the surface instead of letting it press into the hips and shoulders. That makes it a sensible choice for older dogs and dogs with sore joints.

Bolsters run along all four sides and are filled to support the head and neck. The front bolster is lowered to make an entrance, so a stiff dog does not have to step high to get in. The cover is a soft flannel fabric, and the bottom is non-slip so the bed stays put on hardwood or tile.

Use and Care Instructions

A waterproof liner sits between the foam and the cover, which protects the foam from spills and accidents. The cover zips off and can be machine washed once the foam insert is taken out. The foam itself is not washable, so the liner is what keeps it clean.

The bed ships compressed. Give it 24 to 48 hours after unpacking to expand fully before judging its thickness.

Sizing

The medium size measures 28” x 23” x 6.5”, which suits small and medium dogs that sleep curled up. Larger sizes are listed for bigger breeds.

To choose a size, measure your dog standing, from the bottom of the paw to the top of the shoulder, and add 4 to 6 inches. A dog that sleeps stretched out needs a longer bed than one that curls into a ball, so when in doubt, go one size up.
